Audience Research - Focus Group

Following my initial research, I conducted a questionnaire with a focus group of people who are within my target audience; below are my findings:

Primary Audience

The most common genre listened to amongst the recipients was Pop music (8) , followed by RnB (4) and a tie between classical, k-pop and alternative music (3).

As most of my sample engage with popular culture regularly, this will influence me to include recent pop culture references within my website and covers through intertextuality.
30% of my sample have not read a magazine, so this will influence me to create two covers that would catch the eyes of those who wouldn't usually pick up a magazine

70% of my sample would like a magazine centred around genres they like, so I would design a magazine which caters to multiple genres; 20% of my sample would also like new artists to feature, so I thought of creating a magazine that showcases new artists from genres that people enjoy to fulfil the needs of both of these groups

These are some of the recipients of my questionnaire and how they would apply to the creation of my magazine:

NEA Planning - Chosen Brief

I have chosen Brief 3: Magazines and Online because I want to expand my Photoshop skills and also because I have a clear idea of what I would do with this brief compared to the others.

NEA Planning- Music Video Moodboard

I created a mood board based on ideas that I initially had following my research into different rock songs; I particularly drew inspiration from some of the music videos' use of mise-en-scene, such as the bottom right images taken from Paramore's 'Rose Coloured Boy' music video, which used natural framing within the set to highlight the lead singer's presence. I also drew inspiration from special effects, which were used within YONLAPA's 'I'm Just Like That' music video (top right) to amplify the lyrics of the song.

Currently, I am considering applying a 'retro' aesthetic to my music video as this is a common aesthetic within Pop Rock and Alternative Rock music videos, which were my main inspiration when creating the mood board.

NEA Planning - Inspiration from Past Students' Work

I have been greatly inspired by some of the techniques used within previous students' work that I have seen.

The first piece that I looked for inspiration from was a music video called 'Daydream Believer'. I particularly liked the use of natural framing and imagery that corresponded with the lyrics of the song, which I am considering incorporating into my own music video.

I was inspired by the Natural Framing within this
particular part of the music video
This scene corresponded with the lyrics of the song

The second piece that I looked toward for inspiration was a music video called 'Mr Blue Sky', which used animation within its storyline. I was inspired by this and am considering using animation within my own music video to highlight certain lyrics within my chosen song.

NEA Planning - Potential Song Choices

Initially upon receiving the music video brief, I thought of a shortlist of songs that I could possibly use for my music video.

1) I'm Just Like that - YONLAPA

This song can be considered part of the 'Indie Rock' subgenre; upon listening to it for the first time, images of a fast-paced narrative style music video came into my head, specifically one centric to a character who is struggling with a possibly unrequited love suggested by the lyrics because this may be relatable to the target audience of 16-25 year olds.

2) Just A Girl - No Doubt

This song can be considered to be part of the 'Alternative Rock' subgenre; when I first listened to this song, I thought about a music video that addresses the treatment of women in society as the lyrics mock the way that women are 'supposed' to act. This may resonate with women within the target audience as they care about women's equality in society and oppose the objectification of women within music videos.

3) Rose Coloured Boy - Paramore

This song is part of the 'Pop Rock' subgenre; upon initially listening to it, thought about a music video with a narrative that tackles the issue of anxiety and peer-pressure, an issue which is discussed through the lyrics of the song. This could resonate with those in the target audience.
